Multi-model process environment: how to survive and take advantage

Alexander Babkin

Abstract

Motorola

On their process improvement journey many companies face a dilemma which process improvement model or quality standard to chose to better meet business requirements and ensure operational excellence and effectiveness - is it ISO9000 standards, or CMMI, or Six Sigma or Agile methodologies? Is there any “silver bullet” that would fit all needs? Or can we combine multiple approaches and take advantage from this mix? It is getting especially important in distributed development environment where customer may require an organization to follow specific process model to maintain consistency and transparency among other teams/organizations involved in development. So, an organization working with different customers is challenged to adopt new models and standards quickly and effectively while sustaining high organization’s maturity and quality expertise. The presentation will address the experience of Motorola’s Saint Petersburg Software Center in establishing a process framework for synergic use of different process models, controlling and auditing the processes, and measuring and improving “health” of an organization operating in multi-model process environment.
